Updating the Surface - Building Better Worlds in Flowrate
Hey everyone! I wanted to give you a sneak peek at what I’ve been working on lately. Right now, I’m deep in the middle of updating Flowrate’s planet generation system—specifically, the surfaces. This isn’t just polish—it’s a step toward richer, more alive planets that you’ll want to explore (and maybe even survive on).
🪐 What I’m Changing
Right now, every planet in Flowrate has a basic, randomized look. It works—but it’s not exactly memorable. I want to fix that. So I'm rebuilding the surface system from the ground up, with these goals:

Make every planet feel visually distinct

Let surface features hint at gameplay elements

Add aesthetic and biome variation based on atmosphere, temperature, and water

Keep things procedural and lightweight for performance
⚙️ What’s Coming
The new system will hopefully generate:

Dynamic surface features (like craters, rocks, or alien foliage)
-
Subtle color shifts tied to each planet's stats
-
Unique visual layouts for planets with/without atmospheres
-
Smooth procedural textures using shaders
Work-in-progress preview of the new surface system. It’s still early, but you can already see more structure and variety. Plus clouds.
The current planet system — functional, but not quite living up to the game's potential.
🎮 Why It Matters
In Flowrate, you don’t just look at planets—you land on them. You’re constantly deciding which worlds are worth the fuel to explore. If every surface feels the same, that choice gets boring fast.
This update aims to make that decision exciting again:
Will that red storm-world have a rare fuel site?
Did that lush green one just show signs of life?
